What is Aider?

Created by Paul Gauthier, Aider is a terminal-based AI pair programming tool. Its standout feature is Git-native workflow — every code change by AI automatically creates a meaningful Git commit, so you can always diff, revert, or cherry-pick.

Key Features

Git-Native Commits

Every change aider makes lands in a commit with a descriptive message, so you can diff, review and roll it back later.

Multi-File Editing

Name several files at launch or bring them in with /add; the home page claims 100+ code languages, from python to rust (checked 2026-09-21).

Repo Map

A compact map of the whole repo — key classes, functions, their types and call signatures — lets it grasp structure without every file in the chat (checked 2026-09-21).

Voice Input

The official voice mode takes spoken requests — a feature, a bug, a missing test — and turns them into code changes (checked 2026-09-21).

Images and Pages

Screenshots, reference docs or whole web pages can go into the chat as visual context, so edits follow the interface you showed.

Connect to Most LLMs

The docs say aider connects to most LLMs, including local models and OpenAI compatible endpoints, and --model picks the model (checked 2026-09-21).

Installation & Setup

A few commands to get started with Aider

Install the aider-chat package
pip install aider-chat
Set the key, then launch
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your-api-key
cd your-project
aider

Unlock Aider + Claude via QCode.cc

One QCode.cc API key works in Claude Code, Aider, OpenCode, and Codex simultaneously

Example: aider behind a gateway
# Example: your own gateway URL and key
export ANTHROPIC_API_BASE="https://api.qcode.cc/api"
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your-qcode-api-key

# Placeholder id; swap in e.g. claude-opus-5 (2026-09-21)
aider --model claude-sonnet-4-6

One key, several tools

Aider reads the key from an environment variable, so the console key works as given; the same one fits Claude Code and other clients without a separate signup (checked 2026-09-21).

Billed per token

Cost follows input and output tokens of each call and differs by model, so mechanical edits can go to a cheaper one and refactors to a stronger one.

Switch models freely

Endpoint and key stay put — change --model and you change model. As of 2026-09-21, claude-opus-4-6, gpt-5.5 and deepseek-v4.1-flash are all callable on QCode.

Practical Tips

4 habits straight out of the official docs: fewer wasted tokens, fewer rollback surprises.

Add only needed files

The docs advise adding only the files the task will change — extra ones crowd the context, cost more tokens and confuse the model (checked 2026-09-21).

Commit your own work first

When it reaches a file with uncommitted edits, aider commits those first, so your work and its work stay in separate commits (checked 2026-09-21).

Check each round with /diff

/diff lists everything changed since your last message; if the round is wrong, /undo discards that change outright.

Match model to task

Aider keeps its own list of models it rates as skilled at editing code. Mechanical edits and design work rarely want the same one — switching is just --model (checked 2026-09-21).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aider open source?

Yes: the FAQ states it is open source on GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license (checked 2026-09-21). That covers the client only — model calls are metered by tokens.

Do I need my own API key?

Yes. The docs require the key via the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY variable or the --anthropic-api-key switch; another provider means its own endpoint flag such as --openai-api-base (checked 2026-09-21).

Aider or Claude Code?

Choose aider for round-by-round control, one commit per change, and a model swapped by editing --model; Anthropic calls Claude Code an agentic tool that reads codebases, edits files and runs commands — its fit is a whole task. Both can use one gateway (2026-09-21).

Will auto-commits clutter my repo?

Each change is one commit, and uncommitted work is committed separately first, so your edits and its edits never mix. Turn it off with --no-auto-commits (not recommended in the docs) or take a change back with /undo (checked 2026-09-21).

A Typical Session

A round with aider is 4 moves: bring files into context, state the request, let it edit and commit, then accept or undo.

1

Add files

List files on the command line at launch or use /add inside the chat — only the ones this round touches.

2

Describe the change

Say in plain language what to add or fix, attach a screenshot or page if that reads better, and leave file choice to aider if you named none.

3

Edits and auto-commit

It writes the patch, applies it to your files, then commits with a description; with linting and tests configured it keeps working when they fail.

4

Review or undo

Review the round with /diff, then keep it or /undo it. Since every change is its own commit, later auditing runs through git history.

Official Resources

Every external claim on this page was checked against these 4 first-party sources on 2026-09-21 — read them before trusting a second-hand tutorial.

GitHub Repository

Source, issues, releases, the star count and the license all live at Aider-AI/aider; anything repo-shaped on this page follows it (checked 2026-09-21).

Official Docs

Installation, options, model wiring and the repo map all live in the aider.chat docs; the options reference is the authoritative flag list.

Discord Community

The aider.chat home page links straight to the project Discord — usage questions belong there, reproducible defects go to GitHub issues (checked 2026-09-21).

Tutorial Videos

The tutorial-video page in the docs collects recordings made by aider users — an architect and editor model pairing demo, for instance; the project does not film them (checked 2026-09-21).
