Claude Pro / Max vs an API Key: Can a Subscription Be Used as an API?

As of 2026-10-08, the subscription itself cannot be used as an API: the Claude Help Center now says a paid subscription “enhances your chat experience, and the Claude API is billed separately,” and the Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console. What changed on 2026-10-07: Max 5x now includes $100, Max 20x $200 and Team up to $500 a month (pooled at $20 or $100 per seat) in Claude API credits. You claim them by linking a Claude Console organization to your plan; they do not cover Claude Code, and unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover. Pro is not eligible. Subscriptions are a monthly fee (Pro $20 billed monthly, Max 5x $100 and Max 20x $200 per month); when Claude Code signs in with one, it shares the session limit that resets every five hours and the weekly limit with the Claude apps. An API key runs on prepaid Claude Console credits and is billed per token. This page lines up limits, billing, models and authentication precedence from the official terms, Help Center and Claude Code docs.

Four key numbers and rules

$20 / $100 / $200

Pro / Max 5x / Max 20x per month

Official prices: Pro is $20 billed monthly ($17 a month on the annual plan, $200 up front), Max 5x is $100 and Max 20x $200 a month, and Max is monthly only; listed prices exclude tax.

5 hours / weekly

Two layers of subscription limits

The session limit resets every five hours, and a weekly limit across all models resets at a fixed time assigned to your account; Anthropic publishes no figure for the weekly limit, and your next reset time is under Settings > Usage.

$2 / $10

API: Sonnet 5.5 input / output per million tokens

From the official price list: Opus 5.5 is $4 / $20 and Fable 5.1 is $10 / $50. API usage is paid from prepaid Claude Console credits and charged by the tokens you actually use.

2nd and 3rd vs 7th

Claude Code authentication precedence

The order in the official docs: ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN is second, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY third, and the subscription /login credential seventh. With a key set in your environment, Claude Code will not use your subscription.

A subscription and the API are two different things

As of 2026-10-08, a Claude Pro or Max subscription still cannot be used as an API by itself: the Help Center says paid plans and the Claude Console are “separate products designed for different purposes,” and that a subscription “enhances your chat experience, and the Claude API is billed separately,” so you set up each one separately if you want both. What is new: since 2026-10-07, Max and Team plans include a monthly Claude API credit. You claim it by linking a Console organization in your claude.ai billing settings; the credit lands in that organization and is spent through its API keys. Pro, Free and Enterprise are not eligible. The terms are separate too: the Consumer Terms state that the Commercial Terms govern any Anthropic API key and the Console, and the same Consumer Terms bar access through automated or non-human means such as a bot or script, except via an Anthropic API Key or where Anthropic explicitly permits it. API keys are created in the Claude Console, which is also where billing is set up.

The official line: Claude Code on a subscription vs an API key

The Help Center says Pro and Max usage limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, so all activity in both counts against the same limits; Max 5x and Max 20x give five and 20 times the Pro per-session allowance. With an API key it is “Pay-as-you-go, billed per token”: there is no subscription-style limit that stops you (“No hard stop”), and the account is charged for what it uses; but once prepaid Console credits run out you can no longer call the API, and credits expire one year after purchase. Models differ as well: Max lets you spend up to 50% of the weekly limit on Fable models, Pro runs Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 on pay-as-you-go usage credits, and through the Claude API they are billed at standard API rates; the default model is Opus 5.5 in all three cases. Anthropic's 2026-10-07 update says the Agent SDK monthly credit announced in June is no longer available; the monthly API credits now included with Max and Team cover the Agent SDK, the Claude API and Claude Managed Agents, are claimed into a Console organization and used with an API key from it, and do not change your usage limits in Claude or Claude Code.

Timeline

2026-06-15

Anthropic pauses the Agent SDK usage change due to start this day: Agent SDK and claude -p usage keeps drawing from subscription limits, and the announced monthly credit is not offered.

2026-07-19

The in-plan Fable 5 promotion ends on this day; under the current official rules Pro runs Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 on usage credits, while Max can spend up to 50% of its weekly limit on Fable.

2026-10-07

Anthropic's platform release notes: Claude Max and Team plans now include monthly API credits; the same day, the Help Center article on the Agent SDK was updated to say the Agent SDK monthly credit announced in June is no longer available. This page was rechecked against the updated official pages on 2026-10-08.

Confirmed vs not verified

Confirmed (verbatim in the official pages)

All of the following can be checked word for word on official pages: paid subscriptions and the Claude API are billed separately, and Pro does not include API usage through the Console; Max 5x includes $100, Max 20x $200 and Team $20 or $100 per seat, pooled and capped at $500, in monthly API credits, claimed by linking a Console organization, not covering Claude Code and expiring at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover, with Free, Pro and Enterprise not eligible; Pro is $20 billed monthly, Max 5x $100 and Max 20x $200 a month; the session limit resets every five hours and there is also a weekly limit; Pro and Max limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code; with ANTHROPIC_API_KEY set, Claude Code uses the API key and charges API rates; Claude Code's authentication precedence; purchased Console credits are prepaid and expire after one year; usage credits are charged separately at standard API rates; the Fable rules per plan; and the automated-access clause in the Consumer Terms (version effective 2025-10-08).

Unverified and not published by the vendor

Three things have no verifiable official wording, so this page does not state them: first, any concrete figure for the weekly limit or the five-hour session allowance (tokens or messages) — Anthropic only says the number of messages varies with message length, conversation length, model and feature, and reserves the right to limit usage in other ways; second, conversions circulating online such as how much API usage one Max plan is worth, which no first-hand source contains (the $100 / $200 monthly API credit on Max is a separate thing, and Anthropic says it does not change your plan limits); third, how Agent SDK and claude -p usage under a subscription login now counts against plan limits — since its 2026-10-07 update, the Help Center article on the Agent SDK no longer says, and this page does not guess.

Subscription or API key: how to choose

Choose a subscription (Pro / Max)

Suits individuals who use Claude Code interactively at the terminal and also use the web and mobile apps: a fixed monthly fee, with usage counted against the shared five-hour and weekly limits. The Claude Code costs page says subscribers have usage included in their subscription, so the session cost figure in /usage is not relevant for billing. When you hit a limit, the official options are upgrading your plan, turning on usage credits (charged separately at standard API rates), or waiting for the reset.

Choose an API key (per token)

Suits scripts, CI, your own applications and shared team use: prepay credits in the Claude Console and pay per token, with no subscription-style usage limit — you are charged for what you use (top up when credits run out), and /cost shows the current session's spend. The Help Center lists this for subscribers who hit limits too: for intensive coding sprints, switch to a Console account and buy API credits. Anthropic says enterprise deployments average around $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 per developer per month, a useful yardstick against a Max fee.

Checking and switching authentication in Claude Code

Step one: run /status in Claude Code to see whether the subscription login or an API key is active. Step two, to use your subscription: keep ANTHROPIC_API_KEY unset and sign in with your claude.ai account via /login; if you were signed in through a Console pay-as-you-go account, run /login as well to switch to the subscription. Step three, to use an API key: create one in the Claude Console and prepay credits; once ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, Claude Code skips the login prompt and asks you to approve the key. Step four, to go back to the subscription: unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and confirm with /status. Step five, for a gateway use ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN: it is sent as the Authorization: Bearer header and ranks above ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, and the docs describe it for LLM gateways or proxies that authenticate with bearer tokens. Step six: run env | grep -i anthropic now and then and remove variables you no longer use, because a leftover key takes over authentication.

On QCode

The QCode docs state that your Claude subscription cannot be used through QCode and is never consumed by it; equally, QCode usage does not touch your subscription quota — two parallel systems. A QCode key starts with cr_ and is copied from the dashboard; it is billed per token, with each model's price on /models, and plans have a daily cap on API spend. In Claude Code, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.qcode.cc/api and put your cr_ key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN; Claude models run only on this Anthropic-protocol endpoint. The same key calls claude-sonnet-5-5, claude-opus-5-5 and claude-fable-5-1, and switching changes only the model field. A subscription login and QCode can coexist, and the docs recommend CC Switch for flipping between them.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Claude Pro or Max subscription be used as an API?

Not the subscription itself, but Max and Team now come with a monthly API credit. The Help Center currently says: “A paid Claude subscription enhances your chat experience, and the Claude API is billed separately. Claude Max and Team plans include monthly credits for the Claude API.” The Pro plan page states it does not include API usage through the Claude Console, and Pro is not eligible for the credit; a Pro user who wants both sets up Console access and pays for API usage separately. The Consumer Terms add that you may not access the services through automated means such as a bot or script, except via an Anthropic API Key or where Anthropic explicitly permits it.

Does a Max plan come with an API key?

The plan does not come with a key; you create API keys yourself in the Claude Console. Since 2026-10-07, though, Max 5x includes $100 and Max 20x $200 a month in Claude API credits: link a Console organization under Settings > Billing on claude.ai, the credits show up on that organization's Billing page, and you create an API key there. The credits cover the Claude API, Managed Agents, the Agent SDK and the playground, but not Claude Code or extra usage in the Claude apps, and unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover. Purchased Console credits, by contrast, cover the API, the playground and Claude Code and expire one year after purchase. API access is subject to the Commercial Terms of Service. For claim steps and spending order, see the explainer on Max / Team API credits.

What is the difference between Claude Code on a subscription and on an API key?

Billing and limits. On a subscription, usage is included in the monthly fee and shares the five-hour session limit and the weekly limit with the apps; at a limit you can turn on usage credits at standard API rates or wait for the reset. On an API key, you pay per token from prepaid Console credits with no subscription-style limit, top up when the credits run out, and /cost shows the session's spend. Both default to Opus 5.5; Fable models can use up to 50% of the weekly limit on Max, need usage credits on Pro, and are billed at standard API rates through the API.

What is the weekly limit on Pro and Max?

Anthropic does not publish a figure. The Help Center only says that both Pro and Max have a weekly usage limit across all models that resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, with the next reset shown under Settings > Usage; the session limit resets every five hours; and Max 5x and Max 20x give five and 20 times the Pro per-session allowance. Anthropic also reserves the right to limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or by model and feature.

I signed in with my subscription, so why am I being charged API rates?

Most likely ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your environment. The Help Center says that when it is, Claude Code uses that key for authentication instead of your subscription, resulting in API usage charges rather than your subscription's included usage. The official advice is to keep the variable unset when you want the subscription and to check the active method with /status; to fall back to the subscription, unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.

Can I use my Claude subscription on QCode?

No. The QCode docs say a subscription cannot be used through QCode and is never consumed by it, and QCode usage does not touch your subscription quota. QCode uses its own key starting with cr_, billed per token, with each model's price on /models, and plans have a daily cap. Both can live in the same Claude Code installation — whichever credential is active decides — and the docs recommend CC Switch to switch between them.
