Credit balance is too low
Not a weekly limit — Console prepaid credits are gone
As of 2026-10-08, Credit balance is too low has three causes with different fixes. Claude Code's official error reference lists two: if your Anthropic Console organization has run out of prepaid credits, add credits at platform.claude.com/settings/billing and consider auto-reload; if Claude Code is sending requests with a Console API key when you meant to use your subscription, run /status and check the API key row, unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in the current shell, remove it from your shell profile, relaunch claude, and run /login if you have not signed in with your subscription. The third comes from Anthropic's page on the monthly API credits for Max and Team plans, launched 2026-10-07: if an organization holds only those credits, they do not cover Claude Code, and Claude Code shows Credit balance too low · Add funds. The reference files the first two under Usage limits, and retries fix neither.

Four facts you can quote on their own
The literal string people search
The Claude Code error table lists this exact sentence under Usage limits. Treat that string first; do not start from the 5-hour window or weekly limit docs.
Tied to the Console organization
Anthropic’s help center: Claude API, Workbench, and API-billed Claude Code spend prepaid usage credits. At zero you cannot call the API. Failed requests are not charged.
Not a 429 and not weekly
This is not a rate-limit 429 with retry-after, and it is not the subscription 5-hour window or weekly limit. SDK retries keep hitting the same empty-balance check.
Official next step
The error table (checked 2026-10-07): add credits at platform.claude.com/settings/billing and consider auto-reload so the balance refills before it hits zero; set per-workspace spend caps in the Console so one project cannot drain the org. On Pro / Max / Team / Enterprise, run /status first and check the API key row.
Which ledger this sentence is talking about
Credit balance is too low is the Console organization’s prepaid usage credits, not the claude.ai 5-hour window, not weekly limit, and not the tier monthly cap enforced_spend_limit_reached. The help center is blunt: buy credits before you spend them; at zero, API and Workbench stop. Claude Code on API billing uses this ledger. Since 2026-10-07, the monthly API credits included with Max and Team plans also land in the Console organization you link (Promotional credits on the Billing page), but Anthropic states they do not cover Claude Code.
Why Pro / Max subscribers still see it
The usual misread is “I already pay for Pro / Max.” Claude Code can log in with a subscription or with an API key. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is still in the environment, the client bills Console credits and ignores the plan pool. Anthropic’s help center and old HN threads treat those as two systems. Plan exhaustion uses a different sentence. As of 2026-10-07 the official error table lists this case outright as the second cause: an approved ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in your environment routes requests through that key instead of your subscription. A newer case dates from 2026-10-07: Max 5x, Max 20x and Team plans now include monthly API credits ($100, $200, and up to $500 pooled for Team), claimed by linking a Console organization to the plan. Anthropic's page says they do not cover Claude Code. If that organization holds only these credits and runs a Claude Code session, Claude Code displays Credit balance too low · Add funds: https://platform.claude.com/settings/billing. The credits also do not change your usage limits in Claude or Claude Code.
Timeline
How do I pay for my Claude API usage: API / Workbench / API-billed Claude Code use prepaid usage credits; buy them on Billing and optionally auto-reload below a threshold.
Credit balance is too low has two causes: the Console org is out of prepaid credits, or Claude Code is using a Console API key when you meant to use your subscription. Next steps: /status and check the API key row, unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and remove it from your shell profile, relaunch claude, /login if needed; or add credits and enable auto-reload. Per-workspace spend caps stop one project draining the org.
The same literal has also been reported when the client cached a stale zero after a top-up, and for orphaned keys. As of 2026-10-07 the official table lists two causes (credits at zero, a Console API key used instead of the plan) and no new-session step; new sessions and re-auth are community extras, not documented steps.
Confirmed vs common mix-ups
Confirmed
The literal Credit balance is too low sits under Usage limits in Claude Code's official error table. As of 2026-10-07 it lists two causes: Console prepaid credits are exhausted, or Claude Code is using a Console API key when you meant to use your subscription. Next steps: /status and the API key row, remove ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, or top up on Billing with auto-reload. The help center says failed requests are not charged (checked 2026-08-30). This is not weekly limit, the 5-hour window, or the monthly spend-cap 429. Anthropic's page on API credits for Max and Team plans (launched 2026-10-07, checked 2026-10-08) adds that those credits cover the Claude API, Claude Managed Agents, the Claude Agent SDK and the playground, but not Claude Code; an organization holding only them sees Credit balance too low · Add funds in Claude Code.
Common mix-ups
“Switch models and it goes away” — the org is billed, not the model. “Wait a few minutes” — there is no retry-after; credits do not grow back. “Pro users never see this” — an API key still spends credits, not the plan. “Max includes API credits, so Claude Code can spend them” — Anthropic lists Claude Code under Doesn't cover.
Top up vs switch auth
Stay on Console API: buy credits
Open platform.claude.com/settings/billing, buy credits, and turn on auto-reload if you want the balance refilled before it hits zero. If the client still prints the literal after a top-up, run /status first to see which key is in use; community reports say a new session sometimes refreshes the cached balance state.
You already have a plan: use subscription auth
Pro / Max / Team / Enterprise can point Claude Code at subscription login so usage hits the plan pool, not this prepaid ledger. The limit copy is different; do not explain weekly limit with this literal.
Three checks (official mechanism; no platform switch required)
First: is the literal Credit balance is too low, not You've hit your weekly limit or enforced_spend_limit_reached. Second: run /status and check the API key row. If you have a plan but an API key shows up, an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in your environment is taking over: unset it in the current shell, remove it from your shell profile, relaunch claude, and run /login if you have not signed in with your subscription. Third: if you mean to stay on the API, top up on Billing and consider auto-reload.
This ledger is not QCode’s prepaid balance
Credit balance is too low names Anthropic Console usage credits. QCode deducts from its own prepaid balance, billed per token with each model's rate listed on /models, which is a different path. This page does not claim QCode never shows a balance error. If Console credits are empty and the job cannot wait, use another already-provisioned API key on models that are actually sold; the site has a USDT top-up note if you need crypto.
FAQ
How is Credit balance is too low different from weekly limit?
Weekly limit is the subscription pool on a rolling week. Credit balance is too low is Console prepaid credits at zero. One shows up on claude.ai / subscription Claude Code; the other on API keys. One waits for a window; the other needs a top-up.
I pay for Pro / Max / Team. Why this sentence?
As of 2026-10-08 there are two likely reasons. First, the error table's own cause: an approved ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in your environment routes requests through that key instead of your subscription, so Console credits are spent; run /status and check the API key row, unset the variable, remove it from your shell profile, relaunch claude, and /login if needed. Second, the monthly API credits included with Max and Team do not cover Claude Code: if the organization holds only those credits, Claude Code shows Credit balance too low · Add funds: https://platform.claude.com/settings/billing, and the next step it points to is adding funds on Billing (Anthropic: included credits are spent first, then any credits you have purchased). Back on the subscription, the copy usually becomes the plan-limit sentence instead.
I added credits and still see Credit balance is too low.
Community reports say an old session may not pick up the new balance right away, and a new session or a fresh login sometimes clears it (as of 2026-10-07 the official error table does not list this step). If Billing already shows funds and a fresh session still fails, run /status as the error table says and check the API key row, then look for a stale key, the wrong workspace, or a key that can authenticate but no longer bill an active account.
Will retrying, switching models, or shrinking max_tokens help?
No. The preflight rejects before tokens are billed. Another Claude model still hits the same org balance. Recovery is top-up, auth switch, or a billing path that is not this Console org.
Is this the same as enforced_spend_limit_reached?
No. The monthly cap is a tier dollar ceiling: HTTP 429, no retry-after, error_code enforced_spend_limit_reached. Credit balance is too low is prepaid credits at zero. One waits until the 1st or a tier bump; the other buys credits.
Can QCode add credits to my Anthropic Console?
No. QCode is a separate prepaid API path for models already sold, billed per token, with each model's rate listed on /models. Use it when Console credits are empty and the job cannot stop. It does not deposit into your Anthropic Billing page.

When Console credits hit zero, delivery does not have to stop
This is the Anthropic org’s prepaid credits, not a broken key. If you need another billing path, QCode's prepaid balance covers models that are actually sold, billed per token with rates listed on /models.
